RR: Overcoming Gym Anxiety and Fresh Starts

From an undisclosed mountain top in Gran Canaria

ReBuild ReCap

Hi Reader,

Writing this on the plane towards Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. Moving to Spain has been in the back of my mind for a long time, but even if I have prepared this move for months, I can’t say I feel 100% ready.

The mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness is something truly special.

I’m convinced that in order to make changes in your life, big or small, you have to start before you are fully prepared.

The simple choice of acting, and letting go of the control a little bit, will give you the confidence over time to make you realize what you are truly capable of.

If you continue to walk around dissatisfied with a certain aspect of your life, but don’t do anything about it, the fear and uncertainty of whether you should take the leap will continue to grow.

Instead of trying, you continue to walk around thinking about that business idea, asking out someone you like or getting back into the gym.

It’s interesting how the mind likes to play tricks on us.

After I had been taking a long break from the gym a little over a year ago, I was really out of shape and not feeling my best. As a result, I was really anxious about getting back into the gym again.

Even if I had lifted fairly regularly for over a decade, I couldn’t shake it off. The longer I waited, the more my anxiety grew.

After assembling all my willpower, I made the decision to finally sign up for a membership. I knew that I couldn’t rebuild my health if I didn’t start exercising again.

3 things I learned during that time

It wasn’t until I did the reps and got back in shape again that I regained the confidence I needed to realize how silly my previous beliefs had been.

With my brain gradually returning to normal, I could finally confront my unfounded beliefs and see things from a different perspective:

  1. Nobody gives a sh*t about you - It might sound harsh, but it’s true.
  2. People are too occupied with themselves to worry about you - Just like in other domains in life. You are worrying about yourself, but so is everyone else.
  3. Most experienced lifters love to help - I’m one of them. I know what it’s like to feel nervous inside the gym and concerned about how you look. It’s also natural as a beginner to feel lost and unsure about how to use the machines and perform different exercises. We have all been there, no matter how jacked or experienced someone is.

You can watch the video version where I talk about gym anxiety here.

All right , that’s it for this week. Until next time!

Love, Erik
